How do I adjust the tone of my speech?

Adjusting the tone of your speech is one of the most powerful ways to make it feel authentically yours. Whether you want something more heartfelt, humorous, or somewhere in between, here's how to do it.

Quick Tip

When in doubt, err on the side of heartfelt over humorous. A sincere speech will always land well, while jokes can sometimes fall flat with mixed audiences.

Using the Tone Slider

In your speech editor, you'll find a tone slider at the top of the page. This controls the overall feel of your speech on a spectrum from formal to casual.

  • Formal: More traditional, eloquent language. Great for conservative venues or if you're nervous about going off-script.
  • Balanced: A mix of heartfelt moments and lighter touches. Works for most weddings.
  • Casual: Conversational and relaxed. Perfect if you know the crowd well.

Adjusting Specific Sections

You don't have to apply the same tone to your entire speech. Click on any paragraph to see section-specific options:

1

Hover over the paragraph

Move your cursor over the section you want to adjust.

2

Click the magic wand icon

A small toolbar will appear with editing options.

3

Select "Adjust tone"

Choose from: More heartfelt, More humorous, More formal, or More casual.

Tips for Getting the Tone Right

Think about your audience. A speech for a backyard wedding with close friends will sound different than one at a formal ballroom reception. Consider:

  • Who will be in the audience? (Family, friends, colleagues?)
  • What's the couple's personality? Are they more serious or playful?
  • What's the venue like? Casual outdoor or formal indoor?

If you've tried the tone controls and it still doesn't feel right, try regenerating the section with more specific instructions. Select "Custom instructions" and describe exactly what you're looking for, like "Make this sound more like how I actually talk" or "Add a bit of self-deprecating humor here."
